Mount Rushmore is 25 miles southwest of Rapid City, about a 35-minute drive on Highway 16. The memorial has no campground on site. Mount Rushmore KOA at Palmer Gulch in Hill City is the closest major camping, about 6 miles from the memorial entrance.
The first full week of August during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Every campground in the Black Hills region fills with Rally attendees. If you are not attending the Rally, avoid the area entirely. The weeks before and after see elevated but manageable traffic.
