Karnak, Illinois
About
The Village of Karnak welcomes you to jump into the past with opportunities for the future. The village was founded in 1904 by the Main brothers, who established a box factory and later a lumber company. The village was named Karnak, which means 'land of milk and honey' in Egyptian. The Main brothers' business evolved over time, and they began manufacturing wire-bound boxes and crates. The village has a rich history, with over 250 men and women employed by the Main Brothers Box and Lumber Company. Today, the Main Brothers Campground offers luxury camping facilities, including restroom, picnic table, grill, and dump station facilities. The campground is located next to the Tunnel Hill State Trail, and visitors can ride the bike trail or hike to the Henry Barkhausen Wetlands Center, a nature center and natural history museum of the Cache River Wetlands. The village hall provides information about camping and local tourist attractions.
