About

The Tongass National Forest offers outstanding recreation opportunities, including camping, hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing. The forest consists of glimmering rain forests, glaciers, icefields, mountains, waterways, and thousands of islands separated by straits and channels. Visitors can camp in one of the 13 campgrounds or 140+ cabins, hike through dense forest and alpine meadow along 450 miles of hiking trails, explore world-class caves, and canoe/kayak through salt water fjords and unending waterways. The forest is home to 19 Wilderness Areas, 6 bear viewing areas, and 5 glaciers. Visitors can also fish in fresh or salt water environments, and experience the unique wildlife of Alaska, including bears, eagles, whales, and countless other wild animals. The Tongass is bear country, and visitors are encouraged to know their bears of Alaska and stay bear safe.
