About
The Tongass National Forest offers outstanding recreation opportunities, including camping, hiking, fishing, and exploring its 19 Wilderness Areas, 6 bear viewing areas, and 5 glaciers. The forest consists of glimmering rain forests, glaciers, icefields, mountains, waterways, and thousands of islands separated by straits and channels. Visitors can camp in one of the 13 campgrounds or 140+ cabins, hike through dense forest and alpine meadow along 450 miles of hiking trails, or canoe/kayak through salt water fjords and unending waterways. The Tongass is bear country, and visitors are advised to know their bears of Alaska, stay bear safe, and leave no trace.
