The United States Congress designated the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness in 1978 and it now has a total of 943,648 acres. Spanning the Montana-Wyoming border on the Shoshone, Gallatin, and Custer National Forests. The Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness offers a variety of recreational activities including backpacking, biking, boating, climbing, day hiking, horseback riding, and skiing. The area is known for its scenic beauty and abundant wildlife. The Shoshone National Forest offers many camping opportunities, including Aspen Glade Campground and Beartooth Lake Campground. The forest is also home to many lakes, rivers, and streams, making it a popular destination for fishing and boating. The area is open year-round, but some facilities may be closed during the winter months. Visitors can expect to see a variety of wildlife, including elk, deer, and bears. The Shoshone National Forest is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a range of recreational activities and scenic beauty.
