Winding Stair Campground is a unique 15-acre working farm nestled in Franklin, North Carolina, surrounded by National Forest and situated just below the headwaters of the Nantahala River. The property offers 11 well-spaced camping and glamping sites, ranging from primitive camping to luxury accommodations including a riverside screen porch, renovated hay barn, studio apartment, and full-family retreat. Visitors can enjoy swimming in the Nantahala River, gathering around the communal Pavilion fire, and exploring the working farm with its Icelandic sheep, chickens, and guineas, as well as a historic water-powered Grist Mill. The land has a rich history dating back to Cherokee stewardship, through logging operations in the early 20th century, and was transformed into a campground in 1988 before being purchased and developed into its current form in 2010. Whether seeking starlit nights, riverfront mornings, or rustic glamping adventures, the campground provides a nature-immersed experience with full amenities for all visitors.
