About

The Vermilion River flows 42 miles north from Lake Vermilion to Crane Lake, surrounded by the Kabetogama State Forest. Much of the river appears wild, passing exposed bedrock and tall bluffs. The river is best for experienced paddlers due to its numerous rapids and few accesses. The river gets much of its flow from Vermilion Lake, so it rises and falls slowly. It is usually canoeable well into autumn. The river is home to Class I-VI rapids and a dam, with some portages being long but well-worn. The river is nearly completely encompassed within the Kabetogama State Forest, offering several hiking trails, fishing spots, bird watching, picnic areas, and camping opportunities. The Superior National Forest is also nearby, known for its boreal ecosystem, numerous clean lakes, and colorful cultural history. The river depends on a healthy environment, and visitors are encouraged to protect it by cleaning off aquatic plants and animals, draining all water away from the landing, and disposing of unwanted bait in the trash.
