About
The San Juan National Forest offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, mountain biking, hunting, fishing, OHV riding, alpine and nordic skiing, horseback riding, and camping. The forest's stunning scenery ranges from high desert mesas and canyons to high alpine peaks and meadows. Visitors can explore four Wilderness Areas and a National Monument, including Chimney Rock National Monument, which features culturally-rich areas with cultivated fields and settlements extending from the valley floors to the mesa tops. However, following the 2025 flooding events, visitors should expect dangerous conditions on roads and trails, including deep mud, washouts, continued flooding, instability, and changing conditions.
