The United States Congress designated the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness in 1978 and it now has a total of 943,648 acres. Spanning the Montana-Wyoming border on the Shoshone, Gallatin, and Custer National Forests, the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness offers a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, horseback riding, and climbing. The wilderness area is home to numerous lakes, rivers, and streams, providing opportunities for fishing and boating. The area is also known for its scenic beauty, with towering mountain peaks, alpine meadows, and forests of aspen and spruce. Visitors can explore the wilderness area by hiking, backpacking, or horseback riding, or by taking a scenic drive through the area. The Shoshone National Forest offers a range of recreational activities, including camping, hiking, fishing, and horseback riding. The forest is home to numerous campgrounds, including Aspen Glade Campground and Beartooth Lake Campground, which offer amenities such as potable water and restrooms.
