Millinocket, Maine
About
Baxter State Park is a wilderness haven in Maine, created, protected, and provided by Percival P. Baxter. The park encompasses rugged terrain and is held in trust by the Park Authority. It is self-funded through an endowment, user fees, donations, and revenue from the Scientific Forest Management Area. The park's first priority is to protect its wildness, with recreation being secondary. Visitors can hike along miles of trails, camp at one of the campsites, and explore acres of wilderness. The park is home to the iconic Mount Katahdin, which Baxter described as 'the mountain of the people of Maine'. The park's history and organization can be learned more about on the park's website.
