Denver, North Carolina
About
Rock Springs Campground, located 1/2-mile east of Hwy. NC 16 in Denver, is the oldest religious campground in America. Established in 1830, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. The campground features a 1,000-seat arbor, built prior to 1832, and hosts an annual camp meeting with three services daily under the ancient arbor. Thousands of people camp for two and three weeks in 255 wooden structures, many of which have been handed down from one generation to the next. The campground is surrounded by a sloped grassed area, allowing for comfortable viewing of concerts and services. It is a rare happening when a tent is sold, and the buyer doesn't even get a deed for any real estate. Their only claim is the right to occupy the structure during the annual camp meeting. Tents have been known to sell for as high as $45,000.
