The Des Moines River Water Trail is a 525-mile journey from Lake Shetek in southwestern Minnesota to the Mississippi River near Keokuk, Iowa. The river passes through a mix of agricultural land and wooded bluffs, with varying levels of vegetation and river width. The trail is suitable for beginner paddlers when river levels are normal, but heavy rains can cause the river to flood and flow quickly. Hazards include dams, snags, and Class I rapids. The river also has several scenic areas, including Kilen Woods State Park and Talcot Lake Wildlife Management Area, which offer opportunities for hiking, fishing, and wildlife watching. The trail is protected by the Minnesota buffer law, which establishes new vegetation buffers along rivers to filter out chemicals and sediment.
