About
Located in the San Luis Valley, the Rio Grande National Forest offers uncrowded year-round recreation opportunities. The forest spans from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the San Juan Mountains, with jagged peaks and rushing rivers. Visitors can enjoy solitude and self-reliance through various activities such as camping, hiking, horse and motorized trails, and fishing. The forest operates eleven cabins available for nightly rental, and some campgrounds can be reserved in advance. Additionally, the Interagency Access Pass offers visitor discounts for fees charged on national forests. With a vast area to explore, the forest is divided into Recreation Regions for a more isolated view of destinations. Recreation opportunities range from casual drives to climbing the 4th highest peak in the state.
