Accessible only by boat or kayak on the island's leeward shore, Catalina's boat-in campsites offer truly secluded coastal camping experiences. Unique in their location and regulations, these nine sites are all primitive, with no running water, shade structures, moorings or sanitation stations. Campers must bring their own equipment and supplies, including a portable restroom, and pack out any trash or waste. A ranger patrols each site daily. Because fires are not allowed, cooking must be done on a camp stove or in a self-contained BBQ. The boat-in campsites are located on the leeward side of Catalina, with the largest site, Cabrillo Beach, being 7 nautical miles from Avalon and 5.75 nautical miles from Two Harbors. The area is perfect for snorkeling and swimming, with an abundance of fish and a long sandy beach. However, campers should be aware of rattlesnakes and take precautions to protect their food from ravens. A waiver/release of liability must be signed, and any emergency services will be at the renters’ expense. Be prepared for changing weather conditions and pack accordingly.
