About

Lying between the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron in the northern half of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, is the nearly one-million-acre Huron-Manistee National Forests. The Forests offer year-around motorized and non-motorized recreation opportunities. Most popular are the trails and campgrounds along four nationally designated Wild and Scenic Rivers such as the Pine, Manistee, Au Sable and Pere Marquette. The Forests management team of botanists, biologists, archeologists, fire, timber, and silvicultural specialists manage for health, harvest, prescribed burns and endangered/sensitive species habitat. The HMNF is host to such species as the Kirtland’s Warbler, Piping Plover, Karner Blue Butterfly and Pitcher’s Thistle. The Huron-Manistee National Forests have announced their 2026 Planned Prescribed Fire Season. Stay informed about the scheduled prescribed fires through the forest's website, social media channels, and InciWeb, the interagency incident information system.
