About

Nestled in the heart of east central Illinois, the City of Mattoon owns two lakes, Lake Mattoon and Lake Paradise, located in the south west corner of Coles County extending into the counties of Shelby and Cumberland. The lakes serve as the primary source of water supply for the residents in the community. Lake Mattoon has a surface area of 1,050 acres with a maximum depth of 35′ and is a popular recreational site for camping, fishing, and boating. The Lake Mattoon Campground offers two seasonal campgrounds, Campground East and Campground West, with electric and water hookups. Visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, and other recreational activities on the lake.
