About

The United States Congress designated the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness in 1978 and it now has a total of 943,648 acres. Spanning the Montana-Wyoming border on the Shoshone, Gallatin, and Custer National Forests. The Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness offers a variety of outdoor activities including backpacking, mountain biking, road cycling, boating, motorized boating, non-motorized boating, rock climbing, day hikes, driving routes, fishing, lake and pond fishing, river and stream fishing, general hiking, horseback riding, horse camping, hunting, interpretive areas and exhibits, OHV camping, OHV road riding, picnicking, skiing and snowboarding, snowmobiling, swimming, and viewing scenery and wildlife. There are also several campgrounds in the area, including Aspen Glade Campground, Beartooth Lake Campground, and Beartooth Plateau. The area is known for its beautiful mountain lakes, scenic drives, and abundant wildlife.
