About

The Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests & Thunder Basin National Grassland is a vast wilderness area offering numerous recreation opportunities. Located in Northern Colorado, the California Park/Black Mountain area is home to the Elkhead Mountains. The Flat Tops area is managed by the Yampa Ranger District, located in Yampa, Colorado, 27 miles south of Steamboat Springs. The area offers dispersed camping, biking, fishing, hiking, horse riding and camping, hunting & shooting, off-highway vehicles (OHV), picnicking, scenic drives, water activities, and winter sports. Visitors can explore the California Park/Black Mountain Area, Flat Tops Area, and Gore Range Area for a variety of outdoor experiences.
