The United States Congress designated the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness in 1978 and it now has a total of 943,648 acres. Spanning the Montana-Wyoming border on the Shoshone, Gallatin, and Custer National Forests, the wilderness area is known for its diverse geology, unique rock formations, and abundant wildlife. The Shoshone National Forest offers a wide range of recreational activities, including camping, hiking, horseback riding, and fishing. The forest is home to numerous campgrounds, including Aspen Glade Campground and Beartooth Lake Campground, which offer scenic views and access to various outdoor activities. The area is also popular for its climbing and caving opportunities, with many internationally acclaimed climbing areas in the Wind River Mountains.
