About
The Tongass National Forest offers outstanding recreation opportunities, including camping, hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing. The forest consists of glimmering rain forests, glaciers, icefields, mountains, waterways, and thousands of islands separated by straits and channels. Visitors can camp in one of the 13 campgrounds or 140+ cabins, hike through dense forest and alpine meadow along 450 miles of hiking trails, or explore world-class caves and 19 Wilderness Areas. The forest is also home to 6 bear viewing areas and 5 glaciers, where visitors can watch bears, eagles, whales, and other wild animals in their natural settings. The Tongass is bear country, and visitors are advised to know their bears of Alaska and stay bear safe.
