Hole-in-the-Wall Campground is a remote desert camping destination located within Mojave National Preserve at 4,400 feet elevation. Surrounded by sculptured volcanic rock walls, the campground serves as an excellent base camp for hikers exploring the preserve's diverse landscapes. The campground features 38 campsites, each equipped with a vehicle parking spot, picnic table, fire ring, and tent area, with water spigots and vault toilets available throughout. Mojave National Preserve encompasses three of the four major North American deserts and protects over 1.6 million acres of unique ecological and geological features, including the world's largest Joshua tree forest, cactus gardens, sand dunes, and ancient rock formations. Visitors can explore the preserve via paved and unpaved roads, with high-clearance 4WD vehicles recommended for remote areas. Popular activities include hiking to Kelso Dunes, ascending Banshee Canyon via the Rings Loop, and discovering the Lava Tube, while the preserve also offers opportunities for wildflower viewing and birding at Zzyzx.
