About

Gauley River Wild & Woolly Primitive Campground is a unique 129-acre working wool sheep farm nestled in the Gauley River gorge between two mountains in central West Virginia's Mountain Lakes region. Located adjacent to the Gauley River National Recreation Area and a short drive from New River Gorge National Park, the campground offers five spacious, separately-situated camping sites accommodating various styles from tent camping to small RVs up to 25 feet. Despite its "primitive" name, the campground provides amenities including clean portable restrooms, a dishwashing station, outdoor hot water shower, fire pit and park-style grills, and farm-fresh eggs and firewood for purchase. The property offers direct access to the Gauley River for kayaking, swimming, fishing, and paddleboarding, plus nature trails on the farm itself. Visitors can enjoy nearby attractions including whitewater rafting, rock climbing at Summersville Lake, and educational wool felting classes. The campground operates March through November, with a special festival-style camping format during the Gauley Whitewater Season from September through October.
