About

Downstream Campground is located just below Fort Peck Dam on the Missouri River in northeastern Montana, offering access to Fort Peck Lake's 1,500 miles of pristine shoreline. The campground sits beneath a shady grove of cottonwoods and provides a pleasant retreat during summer months, with golden foliage in autumn. This area, first charted by Lewis and Clark in 1804, has evolved into a sportsman's paradise with excellent fishing for walleye, sauger, smallmouth bass, lake trout, chinook salmon, and northern pike. Beyond fishing, visitors can enjoy boating, hunting, wildlife viewing, hiking on three miles of paved nature trails, and exploring the Fort Peck Dam Interpretive Center and Museum. The surrounding Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge and nearby Leo B. Coleman Wildlife Pasture provide outstanding opportunities for viewing elk, deer, bighorn sheep, and the Fort Peck Bison Herd.
