About

The United States Congress designated the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness in 1978 and it now has a total of 943,648 acres. Spanning the Montana-Wyoming border on the Shoshone, Gallatin, and Custer National Forests, the wilderness area offers a variety of outdoor activities such as backpacking, biking, boating, climbing, day hiking, driving routes, fishing, horseback riding, horse camping, hunting, interpretive areas/exhibits, OHV camping, OHV road riding, picnicking, skiing/snowboarding, snowmobiling, swimming, viewing scenery, and viewing wildlife. The area is known for its internationally acclaimed climbing areas, scenic drives, and abundant wildlife.
