SCDNR lands are protected areas that play a critical role in conserving fish, wildlife, plants, and other natural and cultural resources. These lands are open to the public for a variety of recreational uses, from hunting and fishing to hiking and wildlife viewing. SCDNR lands provide access to outdoor recreation for everyone. The lands are managed for multiple uses, including hunting, fishing, birding, and wildlife viewing. Some properties are closed during certain dates for scheduled hunts and events. SCDNR manages different types of lands, including Wildlife Management Areas, Heritage Preserves, Shooting Ranges, State Lakes, and other managed lands. The Wildlife Management Area Program includes specific named WMAs and unnamed WMAs, which are scattered tracts of land leased from private landowners and the forest industry. SCDNR also manages some WMAs for specific hunting opportunities, such as public dove fields, waterfowl management areas, quail focal areas, and bird dog training areas.
