Canning Creek Cove Recreation Area is located on the 3,310-acre Council Grove Lake in the rolling Flint Hills of eastern Kansas. The campground offers 43 reservable campsites with electric hookups, flush toilets, and modern amenities, including three group sites accommodating 40, 75, and 100 guests. The park features plenty of shade and open grassy areas for recreation. Council Grove Lake, created by a dam in 1964, is known for excellent fishing opportunities, particularly for crappie and catfish, and was the first Kansas lake to receive Saugeye stocking. The area has significant historical importance as the location where the Osage Indians signed a treaty establishing the Old Santa Fe Trail. Visitors can enjoy boating with two boat ramps, hunting on nearly 2,700 acres of public land, and hiking scenic trails including the Pioneer Nature Trail. The park serves as a starting point for the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway, which showcases the Tallgrass Prairie Ecosystem.
