About

Buckhorn Recreation Area is located at Black Butte Lake, situated at the northern end of the Sacramento Valley, 100 miles north of Sacramento and 30 minutes south of Red Bluff, California. The lake, formed in 1963 with the completion of the Black Butte Dam, spans 4,460 acres and features 40 miles of scenic shoreline lined with black basalt buttes and blue oak woodland. The recreation area offers 93 campsites including a group campground and five walk-in sites, making it a popular destination for water sports enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers. Visitors can enjoy wake boarding, sailing, fishing for warm-water species like crappie and bass, and exploring 13 miles of fitness trails for hiking, running, and biking. The area is open year-round and provides convenient access to boating, swimming, wildlife viewing, and other recreational activities.
