About

The San Juan National Forest offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, mountain biking, hunting, fishing, OHV riding, alpine and nordic skiing, horseback riding, and camping. The forest includes four Wilderness Areas and a National Monument, providing opportunities to explore and experience the natural splendor of the San Juan Mountains. Visitors can enjoy scenic forest roads, high desert mesas and canyons, high alpine peaks and meadows, and culturally-rich areas like Chimney Rock National Monument. However, following the 2025 flooding events, visitors should expect dangerous conditions on roads and trails, and assessments will be ongoing into 2026 to evaluate the extent of the damage and begin repairs.
