About

The Amole Group Shelter is located at 8,400 feet in elevation, adjacent to the Amole Canyon Day Use Area in Carson National Forest. The group shelter accommodates up to 100 people, providing a secluded spot due to its isolation as the only group facility in the area. The shelter has gated access, twin barbecue grills, picnic tables, and a group-sized fire ring. Accessible twin vault toilets with a paved path to the shelter are also available. However, there is no water at this facility, and no trash service is provided. Visitors must bring all the water they need and pack out their trash. The group camping area is surrounded by tall ponderosa pine trees, with the shelter situated on a small hill overlooking a pristine meadow. The nearby Amole Canyon Day Use Area offers approximately 11 miles of non-motorized trails for hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing, with varying difficulty levels. The shelter is situated near the unincorporated community of Penasco, with art galleries, restaurants, fuel, and automotive services available. Other nearby attractions include the Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort, the Taos Campus of Southern Methodist University, and the Pecos Wilderness, offering world-class fly fishing opportunities.
